Diet & Health Edexcel A Level Biology SNAB notes: Analyse an energy budget and the effect of imbalance on body mass.Energy balanceenergy intake (kJ) − energy output (kJ) = energy stored (+) or released from stores (−).BMI = body mass (kg) ÷ height2 (m2); units kg m-2; 18.5–24.9 h…
- α and β glucose
- Sucrose bond
- Fatty acid structure
- LDL receptors
- Antihypertensives
- Anticoagulants

- triose (3C), pentose (5C, e.g. ribose) and hexose (6C, e.g. glucose).
- In α-glucose the OH on carbon 1 points below the ring;
- in β-glucose it points above.
- Glucose is soluble, so it is easily transported, and its bonds store energy.
- Beta blockers stop heart rate rising, vasodilators widen blood vessels,
- and diuretics reduce Na+ reabsorption in the kidney, lowering blood volume.
- (and therefore water)
- Risks include dizziness, fainting and kidney problems.
- Plot volume needed to decolourise against concentration;
- this calibration curve lets you read off the concentration of each juice.
- Keep shaking time constant; DCPIP is an irritant.
Section 2 of 8Process & sequence
DCPIP titration for vitamin Cwrite these steps in this order; each step is a marking point.
Section 3 of 8Compare
| Feature | Amylose | Amylopectin | Glycogen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Found in | Plants | Plants | Animals (liver, muscle) |
| Monomer | α-glucose | α-glucose | α-glucose |
| Bonds | 1,4 glycosidic only | 1,4 and 1,6 glycosidic | 1,4 and many more 1,6 glycosidic |
| Shape | Unbranched helix, compact | Branched | Highly branched, compact |
| Consequence | Stores many glucose in small space | Many ends for fast hydrolysis | Very fast glucose release for active animals |
All are insoluble so do not affect water potential of cells.
| Feature | LDL | HDL |
|---|---|---|
| Main lipid | Saturated fat | Unsaturated fat |
| Density | Lower (less protein) | Higher (more protein) |
| Cholesterol carried | Liver → tissues | Tissues → liver |
| Effect on CVD risk | Increases | Decreases |
Section 4 of 8Worked examples
- BMI = 95 ÷ 1.802 = 95 ÷ 3.24 = 29.3 kg m-2 (3 s.f.): overweight (25–29.9).
- Mass vitamin C to decolourise 1 cm3 DCPIP = 2.5 × 1.0 = 2.5 mg.
- Juice concentration = 2.5 mg ÷ 10.0 cm3 = 0.25 mg cm-3.
- Output = 7200 + 3100 = 10 300 kJ.
- Balance = 11 500 − 10 300 = +1200 kJ day-1.
- Over 30 days = 36 000 kJ;
- ÷ 37 000 = gain of about 0.97 kg (2 s.f.).
