Reproduction Edexcel O Level Modular Biology: what to do next
These Reproduction Edexcel O Level Modular Biology notes covered the key ideas, worked examples and exam technique for this topic. Check your Reproduction Edexcel O Level Modular Biology understanding with the practice questions below, then reread any Reproduction Edexcel O Level Modular Biology point you were unsure about before moving on.
Section 3 of 20Comparing asexual and sexual reproduction
| Asexual | Sexual | |
|---|---|---|
| Parents | One | Two |
| Gametes | No | Yes, fuse in fertilisation to form a zygote |
| Type of cell division | Mitosis | Meiosis (to produce gametes), mitosis after fertilisation |
| Genetic make-up | Identical to parent | A mixture of both parents |
| Variation | None | Considerable |
| Examples | Bacteria, runners, cuttings | Mammals, flowering plants |
Sexual reproduction requires gametes to join. Asexual is quick and efficient in a stable environment, whereas the variation from sexual reproduction helps populations survive environmental change and disease.
Section 4 of 20Flowers
The role of flowers is to enable plant gametes to come together in fertilisation.
Section 5 of 20From pollination to fruit
Germination experiment
- place cress seeds on damp cotton wool in dishes with different conditions (warm and cold, with and without water).
- O - the cress seeds are taken from the same parent plant, S - same number of seeds, same light.
- Measure the percentage germination after a week.
- Seeds need water, oxygen and warmth.
Section 6 of 20Genetic material in reproduction
Genes are short lengths of DNA that code for a protein and are found on chromosomes.
- where translation makes a chain of amino acids.
Section 7 of 20Plant structure and the practical on seed dispersal and germination
Seed dispersal methods and their features can be compared in a table.
| Method | Adaptation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Wind | Wings or parachute of hairs, light seeds | Sycamore, dandelion |
| Animal (eaten) | Fleshy, brightly coloured fruit; seed passes through the gut | Blackberry |
| Animal (carried) | Hooks or sticky surface | Burdock |
| Explosive | Pod dries and splits, flinging seeds | Pea, gorse |
Why disperse seeds?
Section 8 of 20Plant gametes and the zygote
The pollen grain contains the male gamete (nucleus); the ovule contains the female gamete (egg cell nucleus). After fertilisation the zygote divides by mitosis to form an embryo plant within the seed. Both gametes are haploid and the zygote is diploid, which keeps the chromosome number constant between generations.
Section 9 of 20Compare
| Hormone | Made in | Function | Peak | Effect of high level | Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FSH | Pituitary | Egg matures in follicle | Early cycle | Stimulates oestrogen | Fertility drugs |
| Oestrogen | Ovaries | Thickens uterus lining | Before ovulation | Triggers LH surge; inhibits FSH | Contraceptive pill |
| LH | Pituitary | Triggers ovulation | Day 14 | Ovulation | — |
| Progesterone | Corpus luteum | Maintains uterus lining | After ovulation | Inhibits FSH and LH | Contraceptive pill |
| Testosterone | Testes | Sperm production, male features | Puberty | — | — |
Section 10 of 20Worked examples
Describe the path of the male gamete from pollen grain to egg. [3]3 marks
A pollen tube grows from the grain down the style into the ovary and ovule, delivering the male nucleus to the egg cell.
State why gardeners use cuttings. [2]2 marks
To produce clones of the parent plant with the same desirable characteristics, quickly.
Give two advantages of sexual reproduction. [2]2 marks
Produces variation so survival chances in changing environments improve; allows new combinations of alleles.
Section 11 of 20Hormones of the menstrual cycle
In addition to oestrogen and progesterone, the menstrual cycle is controlled by FSH and LH, both released from the pituitary gland in the brain. The four hormones interact:
| Hormone | Made in | Main effect |
|---|---|---|
| FSH | Pituitary | Follicle development; stimulates oestrogen |
| LH | Pituitary | Ovulation |
| Oestrogen | Ovary | Repair and thickening of lining |
| Progesterone | Corpus luteum | Maintains lining |
Section 12 of 20Fertilisation and the placenta
After fertilisation in the oviduct, the zygote divides to form an embryo, which travels to the uterus and implants. A structure called the placenta forms at the implantation site and provides the developing embryo with nutrients and oxygen from the mother's blood, essential for growth and development.
| Passes to foetus | Passes to mother |
|---|---|
| Oxygen | Carbon dioxide |
| Glucose, amino acids | Urea |
| Antibodies, minerals, vitamins | Heat and other waste |
The placenta allows diffusion across a thin barrier with a large surface area, and also secretes hormones such as progesterone. The foetal and maternal blood do not mix, so the mother's blood pressure does not damage fragile foetal vessels.
Section 13 of 20Amniotic fluid and secondary sexual characteristics
In the uterus the embryo is surrounded by amniotic fluid contained within the amniotic membrane (sac). The fluid cushions the foetus from bumps when the mother moves, and protects it during development; it also maintains a constant temperature.
Secondary sexual characteristics are the changes that occur during puberty, driven by sex hormones.
Section 14 of 20Contraception and fertility linked to the hormone cycle
The contraceptive pill contains oestrogen and progesterone, which inhibit FSH release so that no follicle matures and ovulation does not occur.
- and contractions of the uterus muscle push the baby out.
Menstrual cycle summary by day
- days 1 to 5 menstruation;
- days 5 to 14 lining repairs under oestrogen;
- day 14 ovulation after the LH surge;
- days 15 to 28 progesterone maintains the lining;
- if no fertilisation, progesterone falls and the cycle restarts.
Section 15 of 20Hormone graph skills
When reading a hormone graph, name the hormone for each line, quote values at a given day, and link each peak to its effect: the LH peak just before day 14 causes ovulation, and the progesterone peak a week later maintains the thick lining.
Section 16 of 20Worked examples
Describe the role of LH. [2]2 marks
It stimulates ovulation, the release of the egg from the follicle.
Explain how progesterone helps a pregnancy. [2]2 marks
It maintains the thick uterus lining so the embryo can implant and develop.
State two substances that pass from mother to foetus through the placenta. [2]2 marks
Oxygen, glucose or amino acids (also antibodies).
Why does the foetus float in amniotic fluid? [1]1 mark
It cushions and protects it from knocks.
