02Second: the origin of the short story in Arabic literature

  • Arabic literature came to know this form during the second decade of the twentieth century.
  • Among the pioneering works: "The New Saddle (Saddatoha al-Jadidah)" by the Lebanese Mahjar writer Mikhail Nuayma, in his collection "Once Upon a Time (Kana ma Kan)".
  • And "In the Train (Fi al-Qitar)" by Muhammad Tayimur, from his collection "What the Eyes See (Ma Tarahu al-Uyun)".
  • Following them in Egypt came Shahata Ubayd, Issa Ubayd and Taher Lashin; then the form developed at the hands of later generations, headed by Naguib Mahfouz and Yusuf Idris.
