04The struggle of Emir Abdelkader al-Jazairi
A few years afterwardsEmir Abdelkader organised the resistance and formed an administration whose capital was Biskra, andthe French were obliged to come to terms with him more than once.
They concluded theconvention of Michaud (1834), recognising the Emir asruler over central and western Algeria; then they reorganised themselves and launched attacks, and preferred to make the treaty of Tafna (1835) — which theyannulled by occupying Constantine (1837).
The support of the Sultan of Morocco for the resistance was an essential factor in its endurance, so Francebombarded Tangier heavily; Morocco did not continue its support, and the Emir was deprived of using Moroccan soil for the operations of the resistance.
That, together withthe superiority of French arms, weakened the resistance, and the Emir was at last obliged to surrender in 1847 and was exiled to the Levant (Sham).
