04Second: the structure of computer networks
A network links computers so that messages, information and devices (printers, central storage) are shared.
Networks are classified by geographic coverage:
Classes by coverage
LAN (Local Area Network): covers a small limited area, is very fast, has a high data-transfer rate, and is easy to manage and to secure — a school lab or an office floor.
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network): connects several networks inside one city.
WAN (Wide Area Network): spans large distances through communication lines, satellites and submarine fibre-optic cables — the Internet itself is the largest WAN.
