The general rule

  • Add a mute -e: avocat → avocate, étudiant → étudiante.

The four special patterns

1-eur
Feminine ending
  • -euse
Examples
  • coiffeur → coiffeuse · vendeur → vendeuse
2-teur
Feminine ending
  • -trice
Examples
  • directeur → directrice · acteur → actrice (but chanteur → chanteuse)
3-ien
Feminine ending
  • -ienne (double the n)
Examples
  • pharmacien → pharmacienne · informaticien → informaticienne
4-er
Feminine ending
  • -ère (grave accent)
Examples
  • boulanger → boulangère · infirmier → infirmière

Professions that do not change

  • médecin, professeur, pompier, ingénieur, journaliste — the word itself stays the same; only the article or the determiner marks the difference: un professeur / une professeur(e), le médecin / la médecin (in school French, madame le médecin / madame la docteure).
