05 Applications of thermal radiation

  1. Remote sensing: satellites, aircraft and ground instruments photograph the Earth's surface in different regions of the spectrum (visible light, infrared radiated by the ground, and microwaves used by radar). Scientists analyse these images to study Earth's resources (water, minerals, agriculture, desertification). Egypt is a pioneer in this field.
  2. Night-vision devices: moving bodies (people, vehicles) are warmer than their surroundings, so they radiate more infrared and can be detected in complete darkness.
  3. Thermal imaging in medicine: used for example in tomography (imaging) and in embryology (tracing heat patterns), because abnormal tissue has a different temperature.
  4. Forensic science: a person's heat trace remains for a short time after leaving a place and can be imaged.
