11 What are X-rays?

X-rays are invisible electromagnetic waves of very short wavelength (about 10⁻¹¹ to 10⁻⁸ m, i.e. between 0.01 nm and 10 nm), lying in the spectrum between ultraviolet and gamma rays. They were discovered by the German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen in 1895, who called them "X-rays" (X = unknown) because he did not know what they were.
