10 p-type semiconductor (acceptor impurities)

  • Add a trivalent element (3 outer electrons), such as aluminium (Al), boron (B) or gallium (Ga).
  • The impurity atom has one electron too few to complete four bonds; it takes an electron from a neighbouring bond, creating an extra hole, and itself becomes a negative ion.
  • These atoms are called acceptors (they take electrons). Their concentration is NA.
  • In thermal equilibrium: p = n + NA (8-2)
  • Holes are the majority carriers (p > n); the material is called p-type.
