23Eye safety and classes
A laser beam is collimated, so the lens of the eye focuses it on to a tiny spot of the retina, which can burn it.
For this reason: never look directly into a laser beam or its reflection from a mirror; wear protective glasses suitable for the wavelength; low-power He-Ne or pointers are only safe if not stared at; infrared lasers are especially dangerous as they are invisible and the blink reflex does not protect the eye.
