The constant threat
Point 1 of 11 — Lesson 1: Plant Immunity (Structural and Biochemical Defense)Question bank: 0 questions (0 with pictures)
01 The constant threat
- Every living organism lives in an environment full of other organisms that would happily use it as a food source or a home.
- Those that invade a host and damage it are called pathogens.
- They include insects and other small animals (for example parasitic worms and mites), protozoa, fungi, bacteria and viruses.
- A pathogen that gets inside a host and multiplies causes an infection, and the resulting damage is a disease.
- Because the threat never stops, every group of organisms – plants and animals alike – has evolved ways to survive it.
- Those ways, taken together, are what we call immunity.
