07Ribosomal RNA (rRNA)
Ribosomes, the organelles that make proteins, consist of several kinds of rRNA and about 70 kinds of polypeptides. There arefour kinds of rRNAin the ribosome.
In eukaryotes ribosomes are produced in the nucleolus, at a rate of several thousand per hour. This speed is possible because the cell's DNA contains up to 600 copies of the rRNA genes, transcribed in the nucleolus.
The ribosomal proteins are made in the cytoplasm, then enter the nucleolus through the nuclear envelope where they are assembled with rRNA into subunits.
A functional ribosome hastwo subunits, one large and one small. When not making protein, the subunits separate and move independently, and later may join up with a different partner subunit.
