Point 6 of 11 — Lesson 2: The Human Immune System (Organs, Cells, and Antibodies)Question bank: 22 questions (22 with pictures)
07Helper chemicals
Chemokines – attract (recruit) the large phagocytic cells that circulate in the blood to the site where microbes or foreign particles are found, so they can stop the microbes multiplying and spreading.
Interleukins – messengers between different immune cells. Example: activated TH cells secrete interleukins that activate B cells.
Complement proteins – a group of proteins and enzymes that destroy microbes in the blood once those microbes have been combined with antibodies; theylyse (burst open) the membrane of the antigen-bearing cell and dissolve its contents, making it easy for phagocytes to engulf.
Interferons – proteins released by tissue cellsinfected with viruses. They arenot specific to one virus. They attach to neighbouring healthy cells and induce them to make enzymes that block the replication enzymes of the virus, so the viral nucleic acid cannot multiply and spread.
