02Construction
Arectangular coil of many turns of thin insulated copper wire, wound on a light aluminium frame.
The frame is mounted on asoft-iron cylinder (core) between the poles of a strong permanent horseshoe magnet; the pole pieces are concave (curved) so that the field in the gap is radial.
The coil is pivoted on jewel (agate) bearings and carries a pointer moving over a scale (zero at the centre in a centre-zero instrument).
Twospiral (hair) springs, above and below, provide the restoring torque and also act as current leads to the coil.
