04 Contraception (birth control)

  1. Contraceptive pills — contain a mixture of synthetic oestrogen and progesterone. Taken from after menstruation for about 3 weeks. They inhibit ovulation (by feedback inhibition of FSH and LH).
  2. Intrauterine device (IUD, the coil) — placed in the uterus lumen; prevents the implantation of the fertilised egg.
  3. Condom — a barrier that prevents sperms from entering the vagina (also protects from infections).
  4. Surgical sterilisation — in a woman, the two Fallopian tubes are tied and cut (tubal ligation) so the ova cannot meet the sperms; in a man, each vas deferens is tied and cut (vasectomy) so no sperms are ejaculated (semen is still produced, hormone production is unchanged).
