06 Denatured (methylated) alcohol — "red spirit"

  • Pure ethanol (96 %) is highly taxed to discourage its use in alcoholic drinks (harmful to health and society).
  • Ethanol for fuel, solvent and industry is made cheaper by adding poisonous or ill-smelling substances that are very hard to remove: methanol (causes blindness and madness), pyridine (foul smell) and a coloured dye.
  • This is denatured alcohol (converted alcohol, red spirit; about 85 % ethanol, 5 % methanol, 1 % other additive plus colour/odour, rest water).
  • It is unfit and illegal to drink.
