11Preparation
Direct reaction of the acid with the alcohol: CH₃COOH + C₂H₅OH ⇌ CH₃COOC₂H₅ + H₂O. The reaction isreversible and slow, so it is heated with concentrated sulphuric acid (catalyst and dehydrating agent that removes water and shifts the equilibrium toward the ester) or with dry HCl gas.
