15Aspirin
Aspirin reduces pain, headache and fever, and also reduces blood clotting (helping prevent heart attacks).
Adding the acetyl group to salicylic acid makes it less acidic and tasteless.
In the body aspirin is hydrolysed back into salicylic acid and acetic acid; these acids irritate the stomach wall and can cause ulcers, so doctors advise crushing the tablet or dissolving it in water, and some aspirin tablets are mixed with an antacid such as aluminium hydroxide.
