05 1-5 Powers, square roots and fractional exponents
- a1/n = ⁿ√a, and am/n = (ⁿ√a)ᵐ, defined for a ≥ 0 when n is even.
- √(a²) = |a| — the absolute value, which is why √((−5)²) = 5 and not −5.
- √(ab) = √a · √b for a, b ≥ 0; √(a/b) = √a / √b for a ≥ 0, b > 0.
- Simplifying a radical: pull out the largest perfect square, e.g. √48 = √(16 × 3) = 4√3.
- Rationalising a denominator: 1/√2 = √2/2 and 1/(√3 + 1) = (√3 − 1)/2.
