06 Egypt's national adaptation and resilience measures
Energy: the strategy aims at about42% renewable electricity by 2035; the Benngir solar park is one of the largest in the world (over 1.6 GW), and the Gulf of Suez is among the best wind sites on Earth.
Coastal protection: sea walls, breakwaters and nourishment of the Delta beaches, because a rise of half a metre threatens the most fertile land and the freshwater aquifer by salt-water intrusion.
Water security: lining of canals to stop seepage, replacement of flood irrigation with drip and sprinkler systems, re-use of treated agricultural drainage, large desalination plants on both coasts, and the New Delta project on treated water.
Agriculture: early-maturing and salt- and heat-tolerant varieties, changed sowing dates, and water-efficient crop patterns.
Cities and people: upgrading informal areas, green roofs and urban forests, heat-warning systems, and the loss-and-damage fund agreed at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh.
Transport: the electric rail and monorail, a national bus rapid transit network, and the conversion of cars to run on natural gas and, in the next step, on hydrogen blends.
