02 0.1 What is "the environment"?
The word environment comes from the French word environ, meaning "what surrounds us".
The environment is everything that surrounds a living organism and affects it.
It has two kinds of components:
Biotic (living) factors: humans, animals, plants and micro-organisms.
Abiotic (non-living) factors: light, air, water and soil (we can add temperature, pressure, wind, salinity and so on).
The environment is a whole system: you cannot remove one part without affecting the others.
It is built from physical, chemical and biological elements, and it is influenced by many variables that surround humans and other organisms.
Notice how this matches the idea of integrated science: a river is at the same time a physics problem (flow, pressure, heat), a chemistry problem (dissolved salts, pH, gases) and a biology problem (fish, algae, bacteria).
