11 5.2 Why does water move that way?
Water is "more concentrated" (it has a higher fraction of free water molecules) in the dilute solution.
Water molecules cross the membrane in both directions all the time, but more cross from the dilute side than from the concentrated side (where solute particles and the water molecules held around them reduce the number of free water molecules hitting the membrane).
The net movement is toward the concentrated side until either the concentrations equalise, or the pressure that builds up on the concentrated side (the hydrostatic head, or the osmotic pressure) stops further net movement.
