13 5.4 Extension: calculating osmotic pressure
For dilute solutions: π = i M R T, where M is the molarity (mol/L), R = 0.0821 L·atm/(mol·K) (or 8.31 J/(mol·K)), and T the temperature in kelvin.
✍️ Worked examples
Worked example 4.Problem. Find the osmotic pressure at 27 °C of a 0.20 mol/L glucose solution, and of a 0.20 mol/L NaCl solution.
Solution. T = 300 K. Glucose: π = 1 × 0.20 × 0.0821 × 300 = 4.93 atm (≈ 5.0 × 10⁵ N/m²). NaCl: i = 2 → π = 9.85 atm. A cell membrane separating these two solutions would see water move from the glucose solution to the salt solution.
