19 7A.3 Electrolytes and non-electrolytes

  • Strong electrolytes (NaCl, KNO₃, HCl, NaOH) dissociate completely into ions; their solutions conduct electricity well and have i = 2 or 3.
  • Weak electrolytes (acetic acid, ammonia solution) ionise partially; they conduct weakly.
  • Non-electrolytes (sugar, urea, ethanol) dissolve as molecules and do not conduct; i = 1. Since the electrical conductivity of water increases with the amount of dissolved ions, a conductivity meter is a quick tool to estimate salinity in rivers, lakes and irrigation water.
