02 0.1 Solution, solvent and solute
- A solution is a homogeneous mixture of a solvent and one or more solutes.
- The solvent is the substance present in larger amount that does the dissolving; the solute is dissolved in it.
- In aquatic environments water is the solvent; the solute may be:
- a salt (NaCl, MgCl₂, CaSO₄ ...), mainly as dissociated ions;
- gases (O₂, CO₂, N₂);
- molecular substances (sugars, urea, proteins, organic matter).
- A solution is homogeneous: the solute particles are molecules or ions, too small to be seen or to settle, and the mixture looks uniform.
- (A suspension, like muddy water, contains particles large enough to settle; it is a heterogeneous mixture.)
