15 5A.2 More biological consequences of water's properties
- Cohesion and adhesion (hydrogen bonds): water molecules stick together and to the walls of xylem vessels, so water can rise in tall trees (Module 1).
- Surface tension: insects such as pond skaters walk on water; the surface film shelters tiny organisms.
- Transparency: light reaches algae and plants under water (Module 7).
- Lubrication and cushioning: tears, saliva, joint fluid, amniotic fluid protecting the embryo, cerebrospinal fluid protecting the brain.
- Support: a turgid plant stands up; jellyfish and worms use water pressure as a skeleton; buoyancy of water supports whales.
