24 Common mistakes
- Writing that gases are more soluble in hot water. Gases are less soluble when temperature rises.
- Saying that CO₂ makes water "basic". It forms carbonic acid and lowers pH.
- Forgetting to add atmospheric pressure when asked for the total pressure at depth.
- Believing that most photosynthesis happens at the bottom. It happens in the sunlit surface zone.
- Confusing calcification (building CaCO₃ shells) with acidification (fall in pH). More CO₂ → more acidification and less calcification.
- Using centimetres or grams in P = ρgh. Use kg/m³ and metres.
