14 6A.2 Measuring ozone
Ozone is measured by (i) ground spectrometers (the Dobson instrument) that compare sunlight at two UV wavelengths, one absorbed by ozone and one not; (ii) balloons carrying small ozone sensors (ozonesondes); and (iii) satellites measuring the UV scattered from the atmosphere.
The column is expressed in Dobson units; the global average is about 300 DU, and a value below 220 DU is the conventional boundary of the "ozone hole".
