Point 10 of 11 — Unit 1: Complex Numbers, the Quadratic Equation, Sign of a Function and Quadratic InequalitiesQuestion bank: 0 questions (0 with pictures)
101-10 Solving second-degree inequalities
The method
Step 1: move all terms to one side and leave zero on the other.
Step 2: solve the corresponding equation to get the zeros.
Step 3: use the sign of the function to select the intervals, writing the solution set in interval or set notation.
Points of care
Multiplying or dividing an inequality by anegativenumber reverses the sign.
Δ < 0 with a > 0: the quadratic is always positive, so ">" and "≥" give ℝ while "<" and "≤" give ∅.
Δ = 0 with a > 0: x²-type expression ≥ 0 on ℝ, but > 0 on ℝ − {r}.
A non-strict inequality includes the zeros; a strict one excludes them.
