04 1-4 Solving the quadratic equation with the general formula
For ax² + bx + c = 0 with a ≠ 0: first identify a, b and cwith their signs, put the equation in standard form, then apply x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / (2a).
Δ = b² − 4ac is called thediscriminant.
If the equation lacks a term its coefficient is zero (no x means b = 0, no constant means c = 0).
Worked example
2x² − 5x − 3 = 0: Δ = 25 + 24 = 49, √Δ = 7, so x = (5 ± 7)/4 → x = 3 or x = −1/2.
