13 3.3 Wave-mechanical theory (Schrödinger, 1926)
The Austrian scientist Schrödinger set up the wave equation that describes the motion of an electron in the atom.
Its solution gives the permitted energy levels and the regions around the nucleus where the probability of finding the electron is high in each level.
This changed the concept of electron motion: the electron does not move in fixed orbits with forbidden gaps between them (Bohr), but is found with a certain probability in regions of space around the nucleus.
