02 1.1 Why we measure
- Natural science studies the phenomena that happen around us: it describes them, tries to explain them, and then tests the explanation by experiment.
- A description such as "the patient has a high temperature" is scientifically weak, because "high" means different things to different people.
- Saying "the patient's temperature is 40 °C" is scientific, because it gives a number and a unit that anyone, anywhere, can understand and check.
- Measurement therefore turns our observations into quantitative values that can be written as numbers.
- Without measurement we could not design a bridge, dose a medicine, schedule a train, or test any law of physics.
- Every experiment you will perform this year ends with a measurement.
