Point 19 of 19 — Chapter 2: Motion in a Straight LineQuestion bank: 0 questions (0 with pictures)
19 Short answers to typical discussion questions
A ball rolls on the floor, slows down and stops — do the velocity and the acceleration have the same sign? No. The velocity is in the direction of motion (say +); the acceleration is opposite (−) because the velocity decreases (friction slows the ball).
If an object's acceleration is zero, is its velocity zero? No. Zero acceleration means constant velocity. Example: a car travelling steadily at 60 km/h on a straight, level road has a = 0 but v ≠ 0.
Why does the average velocity differ from the instantaneous velocity? The average is the overall displacement ÷ total time; the instantaneous is the value at one moment.
