Point 1 of 9 — Lesson 1: Support in Plants and the Human Skeletal SystemQuestion bank: 0 questions (0 with pictures)
01Why is support needed?
Every organism has a body made of soft living material.
That material must be held in a definite shape, kept off the ground (or kept from collapsing), and given points to which moving parts can be attached.
Support is therefore any structure or mechanism that keeps the body in its characteristic form, resists gravity and external forces such as wind or water currents, and protects delicate internal parts.
Movement is the change of position of the whole organism or of one of its parts, and it is one of the main features that distinguishes living from non-living things.
In animals, support and movement are closely linked: the supporting skeleton gives rigid levers and anchor points on which muscles pull.
