Point 8 of 9 — Lesson 1: Support in Plants and the Human Skeletal SystemQuestion bank: 4 questions (4 with pictures)
08 Fourth: ligaments
- Ligaments are separate bundles of strong fibrous connective tissue.
- Their ends are fixed to the two bones of a joint, so they link bone to bone, keep the joint stable, and limit the directions of movement of the joint.
- Their fibres are very strong but have some elasticity so that they can stretch a little and avoid tearing under external pressure.
- In some cases (e.g.
- a sudden twist) a ligament may rupture, as in the cruciate ligament of the knee.
