Point 12 of 25 — Lesson 1: Types of RNA, Genetic Code and Protein TranslationQuestion bank: 27 questions (13 with pictures)
12Properties of the code
The code table is written for mRNA codons; the correspondingDNA triplets are their complements.
Degenerate (redundant): most amino acids have more than one codon (64 codons for 20 amino acids).
Start codon:AUG, which codes formethionine.
Three stop codons: UAA, UAG, UGA – they code for no amino acid and signal termination.
Non-overlapping, read in orderfrom a fixed starting point.
Universal: the same codons code for the same amino acids in all viruses, bacteria, plants, animals and fungi examined. This is strong evidence that all living organisms descended from common ancestors, and that the code was established soon after life began and has remained almost unchanged for billions of years.
