Properties of Logarithms

The change of base rule

The change of base rule

  1. When logarithms have different bases
  2. we change them to a common base c (with c > 0 and c ≠ 1):

loga b = logc b / logc a

  • This rule is used when the number is not an integer power of the base. A special case is loga b = 1 / logb a.
