Point 6 of 7 — Lesson 2: Commercial Batteries, Fuel Cells and Metal CorrosionQuestion bank: 0 questions (0 with pictures)
06Factors that cause corrosion
Factors in the metal itself
Heterogeneity of alloys: industrial alloys are rarely uniform, so many local cells form and the more active component corrodes.
Contact between different metals: at welds, rivets or screws made of a different metal a galvanic cell forms and the more active metal corrodes first (aluminium corrodes when in contact with copper; iron corrodes when in contact with copper).
Factors in the surrounding medium: water (moisture), oxygen, and dissolved salts (and acids).
