07The Citadel Massacre (March 1811)

  • After the exile of Omar Makram nothing remained but the Mamluks; he had already lured them to leave Upper Egypt and settle in Cairo so that they would be under his eye and their treachery safe.
  • When the sultan asked him to go to the Hejaz to crush the Wahhabi movement, he feared the Mamluks would resume their hostility while the army was absent.
  • He plotted their elimination and invited them to a celebration at the Citadel marking the departure of the Egyptian army led by his son Tosun to the Hejaz.
  • When the ceremonies ended, the Mamluk contingents were hemmed in and all were killed except those who managed to escape.
  • Thus Muhammad Ali monopolised the rule of Egypt and began to build organised internal strength in the economic, administrative and political spheres.
