11 3-11 Equations of a line and the intercepts
Through the origin with slope m: y = mx.
Slope–intercept form: y = mx + b, where b is the y-intercept, the point (0, b).
Given the slope and one point (x₁, y₁): y − y₁ = m(x − x₁) — substitute, then rearrange.
Given two points: find m from the slope formula first, then use point–slope.
Standard formAx + By = C: the x-intercept is (C/A, 0) — set y = 0; the y-intercept is (0, C/B) — set x = 0.
A line parallel to a given line keeps its slope; a perpendicular line takes the negative reciprocal — this is how most "find the equation" items are solved.
Check the final equation by substituting the given point(s) before answering.
