06 1-2 (b) Second derivative of implicit relations

Method

  • Find y′ first, simplify it, then differentiate again.
  • Replace any y′ that appears by its formula, and use the original equation to simplify.
✍️ Worked examples

Example 16: If x2+y2=4 prove that y3y′′+4=0.

Solution:

  • 2x+2yy′=0, so y′=−xy.
  • y′′=−y−xy′y2=−y+x2yy2=−y2+x2y3.
  • Since x2+y2=4, y′′=−4y3, so y3y′′+4=0.
