Quantum Theory and the Atom: Photons, Matter Waves and Atomic Models — AMERICAN SYSTEM PHYSICS notes: Explain blackbody radiation, the photoelectric effect, de Broglie waves and atomic spectra using photons and quantised energy levels.Every object above absolute zero emits electromagnetic radiation.
- Thermal (blackbody) radiation
- threshold frequency
- work function
- stopping potential
- de Broglie wavelength
- interference
Part 1 of 5Thermal radiation and the quantum idea
Every object above absolute zero emits electromagnetic radiation. Thermal (blackbody) radiation is emitted because of an object's temperature; the spectrum is continuous and the emitted power rises very steeply with temperature.
Part 2 of 5The photoelectric effect
No photoelectrons are emitted below the threshold frequency f0, no matter how bright the light.
Part 3 of 5Matter waves and wave-particle duality
The de Broglie wavelength of a moving particle is λ = h/p = h/mv (m); it decreases when momentum increases.
The Heisenberg uncertainty principle follows from wave behaviour: locating a particle precisely requires a short-wavelength, high-momentum photon that disturbs its momentum, so position and momentum cannot both be known exactly. Wave-particle duality applies to everything; the wave and particle models are complementary descriptions, each needed for certain experiments.
Part 4 of 5Atomic models, spectra and lasers
Rutherford's alpha-particle scattering on gold foil showed a tiny, dense, positive nucleus.
- Each element has a unique line spectrum, used to identify it even in stars.
- Line spectra show energy levels are quantised.
A laser produces light by stimulated emission of radiation; the light is monochromatic, coherent (in phase), directional and intense. Fluorescence emits visible light after UV absorption.
Part 5 of 5Worked examples
Increasing the intensity of light above the threshold frequency increases which quantity? [2]2 marks
The number of electrons emitted (more photons per second), not their maximum kinetic energy, which depends on frequency.
State the equation for the maximum kinetic energy of photoelectrons and the meaning of each term. [3]3 marks
KEmax = hf − W, where hf is the photon energy and W = hf0 is the work function.
What happens to the de Broglie wavelength when momentum increases? [1]1 mark
λ = h/p, so it decreases.
What the symbols mean: λ = de Broglie wavelength (m) · h = 6.63 × 10−34 J s · p = momentum (kg m s−1) · m = mass (kg) · v = speed (m s−1)Explain why a heated metal changes colour from dull red to bluish-white. [3]3 marks
As temperature rises the total emitted power increases steeply and the peak of the spectrum moves to shorter wavelengths, so the emitted light shifts from red toward blue-white.
Why do electron microscopes give finer detail than light microscopes? [2]2 marks
Electrons have much shorter wavelengths than visible light (400-700 nm) and resolution improves as wavelength decreases.
Explain how an emission line spectrum is produced and how an absorption spectrum differs. [4]4 marks
Excited atoms in a hot, low-pressure gas drop to lower levels emitting photons with hf = ΔE, giving bright lines. In an absorption spectrum white light passes through cool gas which absorbs those same wavelengths, leaving dark lines.
Key terms
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Work function | Minimum energy needed to free an electron from a metal surface; W = hf0. |
| Photon | A packet of light energy E = hf. |
| Thermal (blackbody) radiation | Electromagnetic radiation emitted by any object because of its temperature. |
| Stopping potential | Minimum reverse p.d. that stops the most energetic photoelectrons; photocurrent falls to zero. |
| de Broglie wavelength | λ = h/p, the wavelength associated with a moving particle. |
| Resolution | Ability to show two close objects as separate; improves as wavelength decreases. |
| Absorption spectrum | A continuous spectrum crossed by dark lines where a cool gas absorbed specific wavelengths. |
| Excited state | Any atomic energy level above the ground state. |
| Laser | Device producing monochromatic, coherent, directional, intense light by stimulated emission. |
