Magnetic Forces

Common mistakes

Common mistakes

  • Believing that a magnet attracts all metals. Aluminium and copper are not affected by a magnet.
  • Believing that the north pole of one magnet attracts the north pole of another. Like poles repel.
  • Thinking that a single pole can be isolated. In fact both poles always appear together.
  • Confusing the compass direction with the geographic direction. The north-seeking end of the needle points roughly to the geographic north.
