What are microbes? Their main types

What are microbes? Their main types

  • Microbes are very small organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye, and are usually seen with a microscope.
  • They include the following types:
Type Distinctive structure Examples
Bacteria
  • A simple cell with no true nucleus
  • surrounded by a cell wall
  • The lactic acid bacteria in yoghurt
  • and the tuberculosis bacterium
Fungi
  • True-nucleus cells
  • some are single-celled and some form threads
  • Yeast
  • and the green mould that grows on bread
Protozoa
  • Single-celled organisms with a true nucleus that move using cilia
  • flagella or pseudopodia
  • The amoeba
  • and Plasmodium that causes malaria
Microscopic algae Tiny plant-like organisms that carry out photosynthesis Chlorella
Viruses
  • Not cells
  • made of genetic material inside a protein coat
  • they reproduce only inside a living cell
The influenza virus, and the coronavirus
  • Scientists differ on whether viruses are living organisms, because they are not made of cells, do not respire, and do not feed on their own.
  • However, they carry genetic material and reproduce.
