Factoring Trinomials

When the leading coefficient is greater than 1

When the leading coefficient is greater than 1

  • When the coefficient of x² is not 1, such as 2x² + 7x + 3, multiply that coefficient by the constant term to get 2 × 3 = 6.
  • Find two numbers whose product is 6 and whose sum is 7.
  • They are 6 and 1.
  • Rewrite the middle term: 2x² + 6x + x + 3.
  • Then factor by grouping: 2x(x + 3) + 1(x + 3) = (2x + 1)(x + 3).
