Square and Cube Root Laws

The square root

The square root

  • The square root of a number a is the number which, when squared, gives a.
  • For example, the square root of 49 is 7, because 72 = 49.
  • The principal square root is always positive or zero.
  • For the square of any number we use the rule √(a²) = |a|, meaning the square root of a squared number is the absolute value of that number.
  • For example, √((−5)²) = √25 = 5 = |−5|.
