Introduction to Limits

The idea of a limit and its notation

The idea of a limit and its notation

  • The limit of f(x) as x approaches a is the value L that f(x) gets closer and closer to as x gets closer to a from both sides.
  • The value of the function at a itself is not what matters.
  • We write this as limx → a f(x) = L, read as “the limit of f(x) as x tends to a equals L”.
  • For example, as x approaches 2, the expression x + 3 approaches 5, so limx → 2 (x + 3) = 5.
