Introduction to Limits

Left-hand and right-hand limits

Left-hand and right-hand limits

  • For the limit at a to exist, the values of f(x) must approach one single number when x approaches a from the right (x > a) and from the left (x < a).
  • Right-hand limit limx → a+ f(x).
  • Left-hand limit limx → a− f(x).
  • The limit exists only when the right-hand and left-hand limits are equal.
  • If the two one-sided limits are different, the limit does not exist at a.
