The idea of a limit and its notation
The idea of a limit and its notation
The limit of f(x) as x approaches a is the value L that f(x) gets closer and closer to as x gets closer to a from both sides.
The value of the function at a itself is not what matters.
We write this as
lim
x → a
f(x) = L
, read as “the limit of f(x) as x tends to a equals L”.
For example, as x approaches 2, the expression x + 3 approaches 5, so lim
x → 2
(x + 3) = 5.
