Finding Limits Algebraically

Direct substitution and the limit laws

Direct substitution and the limit laws

  • If a function is a polynomial, or a rational function whose denominator is not zero at the point, its limit at that point equals its value there.
  • So we substitute directly.
  • If lim f(x) = L and lim g(x) = M at the same point, then:
Law Result
Limit of a sum L + M
Limit of a product L × M
Limit of a quotient L / M, provided M ≠ 0
Limit of a constant times a function k × L
Limit of a power Ln
